Spiritual Talk: ICONS – Windows into Scripture
On the evening of Tuesday the 29th of July, the St George Bible Study group was blessed to be joined by Marie-Claire Hawwa for a talk on Icons, Windows to Scripture. It was an edifying presentation that provided insight into what an Icon is, namely, “theology written in colours”.
Marie-Claire explained that while Icons provide insight into realities about God, they can never capture His energy and essence. She also touched on how the Incarnation was a defence against the iconoclast controversy and referred to a quote by St John of Damascus, in which he states: “I do not worship matter, I worship the Creator of matter”.
She explained the crucial theological and liturgical role of Icons, particularly on the Iconostasis in churches. They are essential for prayer and veneration. Icons are also used in prayer corners in homes, helping connect the faithful to the divine at all times.
She explained that Icons convey timeless theological truths. Icons are written following tradition, emphasising spiritual meaning over realism. While a portrait or statue conveys human form, an Icon reflects heavenly and divine form. Faces are not depicted naturally, rather they reflect the person beyond this world. Reflecting on this, amongst many other things, St Maximos the Confessor, states that there is a “dazzling brilliance of God’s beauty inside everything”.
Finally, Marie-Claire delved into techniques of Icon and wall painting. She explained the distinct features of the Byzantine style, compared to the Russian and Oriental styles. She also described the symbolism of different colours, with blue representing God’s divinity and red representing His humanity.
It was a truly enlightening discussion for all who attended. A big thank you to Marie-Claire for sharing her experience and knowledge with us! We all gained greater insight and appreciation for the beautiful Icons that fill our homes and churches.
